Arnold Slams Modern Bodybuilders!

Arnold-Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger is considered by many to be the all time greatest bodybuilder, he won the Mr. Olympia title 6 times in a row from 1970 to 1975 before retiring as seen in the Pumping Iron movie. But then shocked the bodybuilding world by entering and winning the 1980 Mr. Olympia competition as seen in the Arnold Schwarzenegger Comeback movie.

Arnold was known not only for being huge but for also having a very aesthetic body, with a small waist. Arnold’s beautiful body was one of the things that helped him make it in the movies, if he had a gross, bloated body it never would have worked.

Speaking at his annual bodybuilding extravaganza in Columbus, Ohio, Arnold Schwarzenegger again shocked the bodybuilding world when he turned the spotlight on modern bodybuilding practices.  Arnold held nothing back as he dug into the current state of the iron world.  He even didn’t spare his friend Jim Manion.

What did Arnold say?  He pointed out that modern bodybuilding had gotten way off track and now the contest winners were no longer people that could be emulated. He pointed out the HGH influenced massive guts of the guys on stage, and how unfortunate that the guy with the most “beautiful” body didn’t win against the bulk monsters.

Arnold spent quite a while digging into the issue and has issued a call for a change in the judging of the top level contests (this is where he revealed sharp differences with Manion).

Arnold is right on target.  The use of chemicals has made the modern bodybuilder into a strange caricature that had drifted far from the original intent of building the body. Instead, the body is grossly manipulated and actually put in harms way.  You an no longer say that the body is being built up in a healthy manner but rather is being torn apart by harmful chemicals. Indeed, many of the top bodybuilders of recent years have passed away at very young ages.

Many have been pointing to this problem in bodybuilding but now that someone with the stature of Arnold has spoken up there may start to be some significant changes.  And Arnold hit it right on the head – it all starts with the judging.  Change the judging and you can change the sport.  It remains to be seen if Arnold’s acute insight is taken to heart.
