A news media feeding frenzy erupted earlier this week when a new diet study broke in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) on Thursday, July 17th. Almost all the reporters got it wrong, wrong WRONG! So did most of the gloating low carb forumites and bloggers. Come to think of, almost everyone interpreted this study wrong. Some valuable insights came out of this study, but almost everyone missed them because they were too busy believing what the news said or defending their own cherished belief systems…

The new study, titled, “Weight Loss With a Low-Carbohydrate, Mediterranean, or Low-Fat Diet” was published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in issue 359, number 3.

You’ve probably noticed that I like to talk about food… and healthy eating in particular. I’ve always said that healthy eating does NOT have to be boring and bland, and if you know a few preparation tricks, can actually be exciting and delicious.

Many people seem to falsely believe that they’ll never be able to get lean if they don’t eat what is thought to be typical bodybuilder fare — dry plain chicken breasts, plain broccoli, tuna fish, oatmeal, etc. If you’ve read my newsletters for some time, you know that I’m against this type of boring menu, and like to give healthy meal ideas that have a little more appeal.

I’ve often receive feedback from my clients who really struggle with staying on track over the weekends. One reason weekends are so difficult is because most of us fall out of our regular daily routines.

People go out to eat a lot more often over the weekend, and there are often parties and other social gatherings that often times don’t include the healthiest food choices. Sound familiar?

You can still have fun without sabotaging all your hard work. The key is to strike a good balance between effective, so you get good results, and enjoyable so that you’ll stick with it in the long-run … and to plan this “effective/enjoyable” balance a head of time.
